The takeaway from SOPA and the NDAA: Congress threatens us with indefinite detention without trial? We'll grumble about it. Congress threatens to screw with our Internet? WE WILL SHUT THINGS DOWN.
Probably because most people on the Internet don't really believe that they can do anything to prevent Congress from pulling the indefinite detention without trial crap. However, we are geeks. The Internet is something we know. The Internet is where we LIVE.
We do what we can, in both cases. And we are talking about two different systems, besides. "grumble"means signing petitions and donating what pennies i was able to, even when it hurt. We have become a fascist state, where money buys justice.
However, the nature of the internet is still do it yourself, although a lot of people rely on the big sites to do it for them. I own my sites and I have some power over them which I can chose to exercise. I can black them out today. The Internet is anarchistic in nature.
Especially since Issue Y is going to get a courtroom smackdown much faster than is Issue X, and Issue X is something we can do more about directly--we're on the Internet and can make a point using it.
