In a discussion of the need for maintaining faceted identities in many communities, sofiaviolet commented:

But Facebook is a tool for enforcing young, white, heterosexual, cisgendered, male, affluent, western norms on everybody! It just also happens to be a social networking site.

Context: it's a small world, but you don't have to share your hobbies with your boss.

Oh, if I agreed anymore I think the nodding would make my head fall off.

The fact that Facebook knowingly discriminates against transgender, genderqueer and intersex people and DOESN'T GIVE A SHIT, is one of the things I'm most pissed off about right now.

This times a million. I'm not transgender, genderqueer, or intersex, but a dear friend is transgender, and Facebook needs to get its head out of its ass and treat them like human beings. Granted, so does most of the rest of the world, but Facebook would be a nice start.

Every time this gets brought up, it just reminds me why I love Dreamwidth so damn much. If I wasn't broke until the end of the month I'd be throwing money at them just for being that awesome.

Yep. I temporarily re-created a Facebook account after deleting my first in disgust, and just the fact that one of my very first, mandatory actions was specifying F or M reaffirmed my conviction that I wasn't going to use the site anymore.

I've been sending them emails and even a few snail mail letters for years trying to at least get a response on the issue, because at one point I did actually want to register. They continue to ignore me.
