I have tried to come out to my mother like eleven times in my life and it refuses to stick.

I guess it could be worse but also I feel like if she would believe me she would be less anxious about my shoe choices.

Oh, I hear that. Apparently I hadn't finished coming out to my dad as of yesterday, despite having been dating a woman for two years.

Boy, do I know that one. With some people it's not so much come out, ta da, done! as a long grinding effort to push into their heads that an identity like yours is a possible thing that exists in the world, and you are it.

I wonder if parents in particular are prone to this form of weird passive denial.
