My kids keep having to do this game at school where they are all different countries and they have to make paper shapes but one lot has loads of paper and one pair of scissors and another lot has four pairs of scissors and three sheets of paper and another lot has all the rulers and someone else has lots of pencils. It usually ends in a fight. Which is quite realistic really. How have our MPs not noticed that we do not have all the scissors?

Do you know that during WWII England had to do without onions? Can you imagine? Being blitzed, and having to do it with no onions? The start of that war could not have been more telegraphed if Hitler had written an entire book saying that he planned to go to war, and yet somehow nobody had realized that the UK imported all its onions (which take really two years to grow from seed) until they were actually fighting.

I grew up in a farmhouse full of inter-war agricultural fiction and there's a book by A G Street in 1930-something where he is basically going "People, we do not produce enough food to feed everyone. We need to start ploughing up everywhere now!"
