Presumably some day the right kind of snow will fall and the trains will continue to run with minimal fuss and trouble and it'll still be a terrible day because people will fall over dead of shock?

Did you see this video of trains in the snow from 1963? Snow that fell in late December and didn't melt until March - we really don't know what we're missing. ;-)
