cesy: "Cesy" - An old-fashioned quill and ink (Default)
[personal profile] cesy posting in [community profile] metaquotes
For the posting of amusing, insightful, witty (etc.) things said on Dreamwidth.

Rules:
  1. Quotes must have originated on Dreamwidth. (Yes, things posted here and cross-posted elsewhere at the same time are ok.)
  2. Original quotes only - quoting quotes on Dreamwidth does not make for a metaquote.
  3. Context! You must credit the quotee by linking to what they said. Include the permanent link to the entry (or comment thread, if you're quoting a comment) in which the quote appears.
  4. If the quote comes from a non-public entry, you must ask for permission from the quotee before posting, and add "QWP" to the post so the admins know all is above board.
  5. Cuts are your friends! [community profile] metaquotes is not intended to be safe-for-work, but please try to respect people browsing their Reading Page at work. Also, please keep quotes short. (How do I make a cut?)
  6. Don't quote yourself, or ask to be quoted. If someone else thinks you're funny, they'll do it. If they don't -- you're not.
  7. You've got 100 characters to set-up, comment on, or explain your quote if you must - that's how long the title of a post can be on DW.
  8. No flaming. The mods reserve the right to delete things that aren't funny. We can't promise this community will be a safe space, but we don't like people being nasty.

If you notice posts and comments which break these rules, alert a community admin so that the contribution can be deleted or mocked accordingly.

After what happened the last time I trusted the LiveJournal metaquotes community, I just have to ask... Rape jokes: allowed, not allowed, or only allowed if under a cut?

Thank you. I'm really grateful for this policy.

The world needs a word for a generic race that is not the race of any human being, so it will be possible to have nonoffensive racist jokes.

That said, it probably won't occur in anything we find elsewhere to quote.

You could have racist science fictional jokes, I suppose.

However, a lot of those creep me out too.

I've clarified the last rule to cover this - anything that comes under tasteless, horrible and offensive (discretion of the mods, yadda yadda, but this would cover rape jokes, racist jokes, or anything similar, while allowing genuinely funny sporkings of such with suitable warnings).

I know I'm late to the party here, but I just wanted to say "thanks" for the clarification. For example, I find a lot of potentially tasteless and offensive things funny (like, well, considering [personal profile] angelikitten's question, George Carlin's infamous bit hilarious, cos in context, he's making a valid point; and [points to icon] the comic strip this is from is full of shocking and intentionally offensive humour), but I also get that some people would just rather not read something like that. It's good to know where certain things may stand with the community maintainers right off the bat.

I'd consider amending rule #1 to explicitly allow stuff that's cross-posted between DW and elsewhere, given that a lot of people do this.

I'd make it a little more explicit, like:

Yes, things posted here and cross-posted elsewhere at the same time are ok.

I'd modify rule 3, too, to be a little more explicit -- adding "Include the permanent link to the entry (or comment thread, if you're quoting a comment) in which the quote appears." Because just linking their username means that unless the quoted entry is sticky, it's going to wander off the front page of their journal eventually.

I am tentatively okay with anonymous quoting of locked stuff with permission, if it isn't abused.

And keep an eye out to see if we recognize anything that's been quoted from our own reading lists, and confirm permission in the comments there. And if there are too many problems, make it against the rules absolutely.
