I usually heard that phrase as "What's the good word?" possibly referring to the religious sermon of the day/week (that phrasing is older than the 1960s I'm pretty sure) - but in this context might refer to "the word on the street" as well.

But yeah, good moment for a smile.

i usually say "what's the word on...." or "any word about...." it seems less confusing.
